Dessert Mountain Pies!

All posts on the Kids' Table were written entirely by kids! Here, Katie (age 13) and Luke (age 10) write about a favorite fireside treat!

As a family, we have always loved to sit around the fire and hang out whenever we get the chance. One thing that we enjoy making over the fire are mountain pies. If you don’t know what a mountain pies is, it’s a hand pie that has filling in between 2 slices of bread, then cooked over the fire in a cast iron sandwich press. Whether they are savory or sweet, there are so many different combinations to choose from.

Two of our favorites are S’mores and Chocolate Fluffernutter.

S’mores is two slices of bread with Marshmallow Fluff, chocolate chips, crushed-up graham crackers, and a toasted marshmallow inside.

The Chocolate Fluffernutter is Nutella, Marshmallow Fluff, and peanut butter in between two slices of bread.

When making the mountain pies, make sure to butter the outside of the bread so that it gets nice and toasty and a beautiful golden-brown color. After buttering the bread and putting your fillings in, seal the mountain pie in the cast iron press and trim the extra bread off. Place it over the fire, wait a few minutes, then flip it to the other side. After a couple more minutes, carefully open to check to see if it is done. If it’s not quite ready, cook for a bit longer. If it’s ready, carefully remove and enjoy!
